Waste avoidance is simply avoiding the production of waste. It is often associated with the terms ‘waste reduction’ or ‘source reduction’, as well as ‘waste minimization’. As stated in Background to Waste Management, minimization is at the top of the waste hierarchy, and contrary to popular perception, reducing the amount of waste that is produced can be achieved relatively simply. Slight modifications of procedures and/or altering procurement practices can improve inefficiencies in utilizing resources, leading to a reduction in the amount of waste produced.

You could develop policies that can relate to specific items such as paper, IT equipment or furniture.

Ideas to include in a policy for reduction of paper use

  • Try not to use as much in the first place e.g. quotas for users.
  • Double-side all photocopying and printing.
  • Print two pages or more on one sheet.
  • Reuse paper in printers and photocopiers.
  • Circulate one copy of memos, minutes etc or use email.
  • Use the back of scrap paper - for internal notes, as a note pad, or for student notes.
  • Allow students to submit work which is double sided and single line spaced.
  • Ensure that fax machines do not produce header or report sheets.
  • Reuse envelopes internally in preference to purchased transit envelopes.
  • Give staff training in the most efficient way to use the photocopiers.
  • Buy recycled paper products wherever possible.
  • Pass scrap office paper and newspaper to other users such as play groups or schools.
  • The National Resource and Waste Forum has published a toolkit for preventing household waste. Although not aimed at FHE, it provides some good advice and information (planning, campaigns and case studies) on preventing waste being produced.

SEPA and the Environment Agency both have their own waste minimization websites.

Envirowise has some industry specific examples of waste minimization.

Game of Marbles (Kanche)

Believe it or not, but no one really knows where marbles originated. They've been found in the ashes of Pompeii and in the tombs of ancient Egyptians, and they were played with by Native American tribes, so it's impossible to pin down a precise country of origin. The earliest examples were simply stones that had been polished smooth by a running river, but for centuries artisans made them by hand from clay, stone, or glass. Mass production became possible in 1884, when Sam Dyke of Akron, Ohio, created a wooden block with six grooves, each of which held a lump of clay. An operator would roll a wooden paddle over all the clay balls at once, with a back-and-forth and slightly lateral motion, creating six marbles. With around 350 employees, Dyke's factory was cranking out five train carloads, or about one million marbles, every day. Mass production made marbles much cheaper to make, allowing the price to drop from about one penny each to a bag of 30 marbles for the same pri...
