Debate 06 September, 2016

Why does India perform so poorly at the Olympics and how India can improve ?

Why we are lacking:

1. Because we don't want to play, but hope others do enough to make our nation proud. We just like to sit around and watch a variety of sports, but are least interested in practicing it for 6 hours a day.

2. "Sports is for kids till 10th." "Intelligents students study, those who can't study well opt for sports."; "There is only one Sachin Tendulkar so don't waste your time to be 1 out of 1 billion!" are some of the brainwashing cliches every parent uses. How do you expect sports to thrive in this environment?

3. Cricket- Marketing is so strong in cricket that they don't let other sports get limelight unless its an Olympic gold.

4. Media- Media dictates Social fashions and trends in our country.

5. Management - Problems that are witnessed at management level can be held responsible for root of all problems in sports today. Sports governing bodies in India face issues like Corruption, Nepotism, Selection in trials based on Recommendation and not Performance, etc. There have always been reports of sports authoritarian using funds meant for development of sports for taking abroad tours with their families. Sports governing bodies operate quiet unprofessionally as people in charge usually does not belong to sports background creating a barrier in understanding the needs of sports person, directly leading to the hampering of growth of that sport.

6. Scope - We are all well aware of the fact that apart from cricket no other sport is well valued and is not considered a successful career option. If a person wants to get into the cricket field then the initial struggle at various levels could prove to be fruitful, but if a person is trying to go ahead in hockey or table tennis in India, the scope is not absolutely absent, but the struggles are comparatively more and harder.

7. Financial - Depending upon the nature of sport, the much needed coaching, diet, equipment, proper clothing etc, can be expensive as most of the sports allow the sportsman to follow a code of uniform while playing.

8. Development - The development of sports in the country needs a change in the basic mindset and evolution of the new culture among people. There is much needed revival of outdated laws which govern sports bodies.

9. Disciplinary - Discipline in Sports is a major problem in the past and even exists today. That’s the reason why there is negligence in the case of Doping, Match fixing, biased selection procedures, violence in sports. These are key problems that are hampering sports.

The biggest questions is what could be done to ensure improvement in sports today. These are few suggestions which can prove vital in improving sports complex in India.

1. Financial support for retired players so that a player doesn't have to worry about means of living post retirement.

2. Corruption Free Operation Of Sports Administration: Merit should be the only judging criteria
for selection of sportsperson. Over the years we have witnessed HI has recruited many world
class coaches  who has unceremoniously left miffed by the working of the administrator or
restriction over selection of players and facilities required to season the players .Its high time
    sports becomes free from politics.

3. Selection process should be Transparent & Unbiased.

4. Proper facilities like Play-Grounds, Training, Diet, Equipment, Medical Assistance, Clothing, etc.

5. Equal and fair chances to all

6. Grass Root Training: Support at the grass root level is absent in India .Only after a person
reaches the senior level and successfully wins medal for the country international arena
people take notice. But before that Nutrition.Playing conditions and various other factors of
junior    sportsperson should be looked into.

Game of Marbles (Kanche)

Believe it or not, but no one really knows where marbles originated. They've been found in the ashes of Pompeii and in the tombs of ancient Egyptians, and they were played with by Native American tribes, so it's impossible to pin down a precise country of origin. The earliest examples were simply stones that had been polished smooth by a running river, but for centuries artisans made them by hand from clay, stone, or glass. Mass production became possible in 1884, when Sam Dyke of Akron, Ohio, created a wooden block with six grooves, each of which held a lump of clay. An operator would roll a wooden paddle over all the clay balls at once, with a back-and-forth and slightly lateral motion, creating six marbles. With around 350 employees, Dyke's factory was cranking out five train carloads, or about one million marbles, every day. Mass production made marbles much cheaper to make, allowing the price to drop from about one penny each to a bag of 30 marbles for the same pri...
